NEW GOVERNMENT RESOURCE FOR MEMBERS

Communications Alliance today launched a new important resource for its members. A new one-stop-shop government link on the web site provides information on everything you need to know about government and telecommunications. Click on the Australian Government link on the left hand side of the web site to find information and links to key players, current inquiries, current bills etc.

COMMENT SOUGHT ON REVISED DEPARTMENT OF DEFENCE CABLING STANDARD

The telecommunications customer cabling requirements for the Department of Defence are specified in ACA TS 035-1997 Requirements for Installation of Temporary Telecommunications Customer Cabling for Defence Purposes. With input from the DoD and ACMA, Communications Alliance has carried out a review of the requirements of ACA TS 035-1997 and is now seeking comments on a new draft Defence Cabling Standard proposed to replace the ACA Standard.

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR AUSTRALIAN PRIVACY AWARDS

Communications Alliance members are invited to nominate for the 2008 Australian Privacy Awards, which recognise and reward good privacy practices across the private and public sectors. An initiative of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, the Awards will be presented in four categories - Large Business Award, Microsoft Small-Medium Business Award, Community and NGO Award, and the Symantec Government Award - with an overall Grand Award presented to the most outstanding entrant.

REVISED CUSTOMER EQUIPMENT STANDARDS

Six revised Customer Equipment Standards and an accompanying Guideline have been approved by the Board. These revisions introduce new requirements for customer equipment used in conjunction with VDSL2 services, satellite services and digital services. All the Standards will be submitted to ACMA with a recommendation for making under the Telecommunications Act. Until such time these new versions remain voluntary. The revised publications are:

  • Customer Access Equipment for connection to a Telecommunications Network AS/ACIF S003:2008
  • Voice frequency performance requirements for Customer Equipment AS/ACIF S004:2008
  • Requirements for Customer Equipment, operating in the voiceband, for connection to the non-switched Telecommunications Network AS/ACIF S006:2008
  • Requirements for connection to an air interface of a telecommunications network — Part 1: General AS/ACIF S042.1:2008
  • Requirements for Customer Equipment for connection to a metallic local loop interface of a Telecommunications Network - Part 2: Broadband AS/ACIF S043.2:2008
  • Requirements for Customer Equipment for connection to a metallic local loop interface of a Telecommunications Network Part 3 DC, low frequency AC and voiceband AS/ACIF S043.3:2008
  • Supporting Arrangements for AS/ACIF S042 Requirements for connection to an air interface of a Telecommunications Network CA G548:2008

AUSTRALIA’S COMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRY PROPOSES BLUEPRINT FOR BROADBAND POLICY DEVELOPMENT

Australia’s communications industry has agreed on a series of “fundamental principles” that should be the basis for development of policy governing the broadband environment.
The Board of Communications Alliance, the industry’s peak representative body, has signed off on the principles and will advocate that the Federal Government adopt them as the framework for its broadband policy development.  Media Release  Policy Focus 2008
